Appendix 2: Changes to The Social Report 2016

Changes made to the domains and indicators used in The Social Report 2016 (ie naming changes; new data sources; new indicators; domain changes) are detailed in the table below.

Area Change
Report structure The report has been restructured to have a summary section in the front, and domain summaries added in the introductions. A frequently asked questions (FAQ) section has been added.
Health The desired outcomes statement has been revised. The “cigarette smoking” indicator is now based solely on information from the New Zealand Health Survey (NZHS). The “participation in physical activity” indicator has moved from the Leisure and Recreation domain. There are two new indicators: “self-rated health” and “psychological distress”.
Knowledge and skills
Paid work All Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) data has been rebased. There is a new indicator: “satisfaction with job”.
Economic standard of living The desired outcomes statement has been revised. There is a new indicator: “material hardship”.
Civil and political rights The desired outcomes statement has been revised. There is a new indicator: “acceptance of diversity”. The “perceived discrimination” indicator is now based solely on the New Zealand General Social Survey (NZGSS).
Cultural identity The desired outcomes statement has been revised. There is a new indicator: “ability to be yourself in New Zealand”.
Leisure and recreation The desired outcomes statement has been revised. The “satisfaction with leisure time” indicator data source has changed to the NZGSS.
Safety The “criminal victimisation” indicator and “fear of crime” indicator data sources have changed to the NZGSS.
Social connectedness The desired outcomes statement has been revised. The “trust in others” indicator and “loneliness” indicator data sources have changed to the NZGSS.
Life satisfaction The desired outcomes statement has been provided.
